Two teams of our school, both English- (Polina Striletska, Polina Masiuk, Angelina Parkhomenko) and Ukrainian-speaking ones (Volodymyr Kargamanove, Maria Prilipko, Yegor Beliakevych), participated in it and represented gymnasia very decently. The teams played in a world debating format both in affirmative and negative roles and debated over a topic of the senior league “The study of Ukrainian youth abroad benefits the development of Ukraine”. During the game the players of our teams evidently demonstrated a high preparation level, confidence, and logical approach to their performance. Only the English-speaking team called “Sweet Gream” won and our own Polina Masiuk became one of the best speakers of the tournament but the Ukrainian speaking team also showed their good knowledge and understanding of the topic. Gymnasists gained a really valuable experience and significantly perfected their public speaking skills.

our teacher has become the teacher of the year *

27.10.2017

On October 26, the attention of the majority of Cherkasy educators was fixed on the regional Teacher’s House where they conducted the city finals of the national TEACHER OF THE YEAR contest. Six teachers from different schools of the city got to the final stage and our own German teacher N. K. Karnaukhova was among them.
Naturally, the finals were preceded by an immense amount of work done: the creation of multimedia presentations, video clips, and an open class for the students of one of the city schools, as well as numerous printed methodological studies. The candidates were assessed by two city jury boards (official and alternative), the members of which prepared for the participants a lot of challenging tasks. Beside the jury, the tasks had to be completed under the supervision of hundreds of spectators.
After three hours of anticipation with clenching fists and keeping our fingers crossed for our teacher, we got a long-awaited and pleasant result – our own N. K. Karnaukhova won the right to be called TEACHER OF THE YEAR-2018 and, together with two other city teachers, a chance to represent Cherkasy at the contest of the regional level.
Our congratulations to Nadia Kostyantynivna on her victory and recognition!
In the pic: N. K. Karnaukhova is receiving congratulations from her colleagues and gymnasia students during the first minutes after the results were announced!

The program is managed by the “Open World Center” of the Library of Congress of the USA. The delegates from our city were nominated by the Rotary Club Cherkasy-Center.

Within the program, Galina Leonidivna had a unique opportunity to Washington, DC and main Kansas cities to learn more about the role of civil education in the process of building the country.

The program started with the meeting with the Executive Director of Open World Leadership Center John O’Keefe in the Library of Congress, Washington, DC. On this very day, the delegates had a chance to hear the lectures about American federalization and the reasons why the US is able to remain a united country from New York University teacher Dr Sam Potolicchio, the president of Preparing Global Leaders Foundation and Georgetown University teacher Dr George Brown. The program participants were also present at the XVIII round table discussion on the topic “Can a national value-based program help battle the splits in the Ukrainian society?”, the debate was quite intensive, informative, and thought-provoking. After a hard working day, the delegates rested while being on the sightseeing tour and watching the landmarks of the Capital City – Washington, DC.

Starting from the 13th of October, the delegates worked in different cities of Kansas. It is there where the participants started getting the actual knowledge about the importance of civil education and implementation of the student project works which could encourage them to integrate with the local power organs and taught to be useful members of their communities. The program was created by Rotary Club Hutchinson, Kansas and was interesting, intensive, informative, instructive, and most useful in all terms. The professional level of it was pointed out by all the participants.

During the guided tours to schools and colleges, meetings with the important representatives of the US educational system, specifically Kansas State Department of Education Commissioner, our Vice Principal was deeply impressed by the practical side of American education, the actual proximity of knowledge to life expectations, interdisciplinary connections, youth socialization, and resource base of the institutions.

On Thursday 14 October, the members of our gymnasia discussion club “Dialogue of Cultures” as well as the invited students of the 10th grades had a planned meeting in English. The speaker of the club was the grade 11-A student and the winner of the international FLEX program (Future Leaders Exchange) Polina Masiuk. She studied in the US school in Indiana during the previous academic year and reported about having received an invaluable experience of the education in the American society. Notably, Polina brought back to Ukraine the record with A’s and B’s only. In her multimedia presentation she shared her impressions from studying and living the American host family. She also got the 10-graders acquainted with the concept of home education and compared the Ukrainian system of education with the American one. Among the positive aspects she emphasized on were the number of major and elective subjects, which cannot be more than 8, the high school students can choose the level at which the subject will be taught to them, they may make up classes to study this or that subject as they are not divided into classes in high school, and lastly, they have one large lunch break (an hour +) whereas the majority of other breaks are not longer than 5 minutes. Of course, there were the drawbacks as well because people are different everywhere and no educational system is ideal.

The young people from Cherkasy and Poland are making a Ukrainian-Polish film called “Vitoslav’s Heritage”. In Gazeta Vyborcha we read that the opening night of the film will be in September.

The Ukrainians arrived in Bydgoszcz on August 11, and started the work right away. The shooting of the film will last for two weeks. The project involves the young people from two sister-cities – Cherkasy (Ukraine) and Bydgoszcz (Poland).

“It will be a story of the tragic love between Prince Vitoslav and his beloved.   We have a desire to demonstrate such values as love, friendship and tolerance, and we will accomplish this through the folk dances”, say the organizers.

The script was written by the Polish teenagers under the guidance of the teacher of the Polish language Yustyna Misterkievich, and the choreographer Anna Zhidek, folk group “Kraina”.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY: THE CHINESE OFFER PARTNERSHIP

25.07.2017

On July 24 our Gymnasia hosted a delegation from the Institute of Confucius that is located at the premises of Taras Shevchenko National University, Kyiv. Lian Tsi, a teacher of Chinese, offered us to start Chinese lessons for the students of 5-11th forms beginning from the new academic year. The Chinese party takes responsibility of providing the material and technical resources for this project. A teacher of Chinese may arrive at our Gymnasia in October-November. Our party will be responsible for providing accommodation and organizing a group of schoolchildren for learning Chinese.
The Principal of FCG conducted preliminary negotiations with the members of the delegation. The parties have agreed to research the demand and start the project as soon as possible. It is quite possible that soon the students of our Gymnasia as well as other schools will have a chance to “struggle” with learning the Chinese characters.
P.S. Last academic year Chinese was not taught in our Gymnasia due to the lack of a qualified teacher. Before, 3-7 students used to study Chinese with Tsin Tsin, a native speaker from China.

While corresponding, children have a great opportunity to improve their language skills, as they have to think in English and know how to express their thoughts in a foreign language.

FCG teacher Nina Ovcharova’s fifth form English students have been corresponding with the children from Lope de Vega International School in Spain for about a year. They share information about different projects at school and about out-of-school activities. They also send each other photos of their families and friends holiday greetings, and small presents such as coins, stickers, postcards and magnets.
